Celebrating 35 years empowering women. Running Bare director, Yolanda Powell, shares the RB journey from humble beginnings to an Australian pioneer in the activewear industry.

Running Bare turns 35 this year. Tell us how it all started?

My parents Brian and Corin started the business in 1983. My father was/is a fabric expert and Mum is a fashionista from way back. Mum started taking ballet and jazz classes at the local church and couldn't find any fun leotards to wear, everything was too dull and masculine.

Running Bare injected itself into the 80's activewear market as a fresh, fun, fashion-forward, Australian-made brand that was designed and produced for women.

Has the brand changed much in 35 years?

We remain committed to our core values and we pride ourselves on staying at the forefront of the Australian consumers' attitude towards activewear.

Who is the Running Bare woman?

Running Bare women are fitness-focused and fashion conscious. We design for all women- whoever you are, whatever size you are - we make sure you are fiercely fashionable, feminine and above all functional. Mum is now 70 and has been wearing Running Bare for decades, so whether you're young or old, prefer prints or plains, Running Bare is a brand every women can wear. 

What has been the one stand-out piece you have designed?

The Running Bare Black Supplex Full-Length Tight. RB Supplex is our signature fabric that we still knit locally and, like 70% of the Running Bare collection, is still manufactured in Sydney, Australia.

What's the inspiration behind the new collection?

The RB brand turned 35 this year, I turned 40 and Mum turned 70. We felt not only was this something to celebrate, but this was in essence the core - and beauty - of the success of the RB brand.
