Skin-fit foods:

9 secrets for glowing skin, a happy gut and your best body ever.

by: Carmen Hamilton "The Chronicles of Her

Have you ever noticed that the healthiest-looking people not only have amazing figures - they’re also radiant? Their complexion is clear, their skin glows and their eyes are beaming white. Genetics definitely plays a part, but adhering to a ‘skin-fit’ diet can make a dramatic difference too. The good news is that these skin-fit foods are also kind to your waistline and your general gut health, so it’s a win-win situation.

These are the foods I make sure I incorporate into my diet each week.

Salmon: This is the King of Omega-3 fatty acids, a.k.a. your skin’s BFF. Opt for wild salmon if you can get your hands on it, as this tends to contain fewer calories, lower levels of saturated fat and less harmful contaminants. I am to eat salmon 2-3 times per week.

Avocado: The fatty acids in avocado help to keep your skin moisturised and soft - the key to a youthful-looking complexion. They’re also packed with free-radical-fighting antioxidants like beta-carotene, vitamin C and vitamin E, which boost your skin’s natural protection against sun damage and ageing. I have half an avocado a day in smoothies or salads.

Berries – blueberries: Blueberries are my fruit of choice. Why? They contain a tonne of antioxidants, vitamin A, vitamin C and vitamin E - and they’re also a low calorie treat. I have frozen blueberries in my smoothies, and snack on fresh, organic blueberries when I’m craving something sweet.

Carrots and sweet potatoes:
Apparently dosing-up on carotene-packed veggies like carrots and sweet potatoes can actually enhance your natural tan. I try to leave the skin on when eating these vegetables for extra nutritional benefits.

Pepitas: (a.k.a. pumpkin seeds): These are super high in zinc (and other vitamins and minerals like selenium, vitamin A and essential fatty acids), which help to maintain your skin’s collagen levels and elasticity - crucial to winning the anti-ageing battle! I sprinkle them over pretty much every meal.

Filtered or alkaline: More, more, MORE! You know how models always list ‘drinking more water’ as their best skin tip? That’s because it works - not only to keep your skin looking fresh and hydrated, but also to flush-out toxins that cause impurities. Note: if (like me) you can’t say no to your morning coffee or a few glasses of red, this is even more reason to up your water intake.

Supercharged skin supplements: For an extra boost, I incorporate skin-loving supplements like The Super Elixir or The Beauty Chef’s ‘Glow’ powder into my daily diet by heaping a few teaspoons into my smoothies. These contain a concentrated dose of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids and amino acids to enhance your skin from the inside out and nourish your entire body too.
